The History of Team PugnaciousD (abridged)
Forged in the fiery depths of 2004, Team PugnaciousD consists of Messrs Barnard and Hills and a 1988 Peugeot 309 XLD (PugnaciousD* itself).
The team was originally formed to take part in the 2004
Staples2Naples
(S2N) rally, a 1,500mile challenge to buy a car for under £100 and drive it to Naples from Calais in 4 days. Various challenges were put forward along the way including: Drive through as many countries in one day as possible and the now infamous: Have your team photographed in front of petrol pump number 1.
Purchased from eBay for the princely sum of £70.00, it was only after collection that the team realised the car, though predominantly red, sported a blue driver's side door and boot.
Once cleaned and polished, in a fit of inspiration, the car was given the now legendary PugnaciousD stripes and number set:
As also seen on its short-lived successor PugnaciousE and briefly (for wedding related shenanigans) on PugnaciousTDI and PugnaciousCDTi (the latter two never actually having competed in a banger rally - photos below for amusement purposes only). In addition, it had its wheels spray painted white, two new tyres and some white stickers placed in the bumper inserts for an additional sporty touch. All stickers on the Pugnacious family cars have been made from sticky-backed plastic.
No further mechanical changes were made, and the car travelled to Naples and back in a total of 6 days, almost hitch free, finishing 9th in it's first rally out of a field of 60(ish). The 2004 blog is available in the links to the right.
The car was officially retired, and was laid up at Jon's Nanna's house, with post-rally car being administered by Jon's Dad.
In 2005, Team PugnaciousD took part in Staples2Naples again. This time the team expanded to 4 members, so a larger car was needed. £100 secured a blue Vauxhall Carlton estate (PugnaciousE) which, while looking pretty reasonable, was mechanically horrid and scrapped at the end. The 2005 blog is available in the links to the right.
The rally run was interrupted in 2006 when one third of the team got married over the same weekend as S2N 06.
2007, the CzechWrecks (CRX) rally, launched the previous year, suddenly seemed like a good idea, as PugnaciousD (the car) was still parked and ready for further action. Despite major reservations from Mrs Barnard, the original Dreem Teem of Messrs Barnard, Hills and PugnaciousD were entered into CRX 2007.
This, then, is their story.
*For the uninitiated, the team name PugnaciousD is a reference to the band TencaciousD. Peugeot is sometimes referred to as Pug, and the car is a diesel, hence the D. Easy!
